Former UFC athlete Rory MacDonald secured a dominant win in his debut fight under the Bellator banner.
LONDON – Former UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald won his debut Bellator fight with ease after completely dismantling English striker Paul Daley in front of a sell-out Wembley Arena crowd on Friday, May 19.
MacDonald asserted his authority early in the first round by taking Daley down, passing guard (transitioning into a dominant position), and striking intelligently.
Early in the second round Rory fought in a similar fashion and finished the fight with an early victory, making Daley submit thanks to an expert rear naked choke.
At a preview event earlier this week MacDonald told me that when he left the UFC to join Bellator, he felt like he had a reputation to live up to – “to be their killer out there.” Tonight, he proved just that.
After the bout, MacDonald sent out a warning to the division: “I am coming for the belt.”
Daley, not too downhearted, sent out a challenge to his countryman Michael ‘Venom’ Page, who was cage-side. Daley called Page a “p***y” before a riot – believed to involve both fighters – broke out in front of press row.
A high-profile ‘Battle of Britain’ supported the main event with Linton ‘The Swarm’ Vassell locking horns with Liam McGeary.
Vassell imposed his game onto McGeary by taking him to the canvas and dominating the former Bellator champion with a nasty ground and pound game. In the third round, Vassell locked in an arm triangle choke (a blood chokehold which strangles an opponent) and made McGeary tap out, thrusting himself into world title contention.
Earlier in the evening Kevin Ferguson Jr, the son of the late, great street-fighter Kimbo Slice, made amends for losing his debut mixed martial arts bout last year by dominating D.J Griffin.
‘Baby Slice’ spoke to Business Insider on Wednesday and listed some of the ways his father had helped him in and outside of the sport. Judging by Baby Slice’s performance on Saturday, they were lessons well worth heeding.
As for the untelevised show, English middleweight Fabian Edwards proved to be a hot prospect. Within the first three and a half minutes, Edwards launched a hellacious kneecap into Rafal ‘Cerja’ Cejrowski’s jaw.
The connection could be heard from press row and was enough for Cejrowski to slump awkwardly to the floor. The fight was waved off and Edwards scored a savage knockout victory.
